Adult Day Care—A Whole New World for Caregivers and Their Loved Ones!
Bay Aging manages two adult day care programs—one in Gloucester and the other in Tappahannock. The centers have as their mission: 1) to provide people with needed care, socialization and supervision in a community setting; and 2) to provide caregivers much needed respite from the demanding responsibilities of providing 24-hour care.
Registered Nurses and professionally trained aide staff provide adult day health services which serve a variety of adults ranging from those with cognitive disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease to those with physical disabilities due to a chronic illness such as Parkinson’s disease or an event such as a stroke to adults with traumatic brain injuries or developmental disabilities.
Between the two centers, there is an average of 45 people enrolled—at any one time—in the program. Adult day care is flexible to meet the needs of caregivers. Some people attend one day a week, others attend half-days, and yet others (especially those who have employed caregivers) attend five days a week.
Although the day care is very much about providing assistance with activities of daily living such as feeding, dressing, medication management and other needs, there is always time for the fun stuff! These folks have access to activities that exercise their minds and their bodies and boy, do they have fun doing it!
They use Gertie balls for ball toss where everyone can catch the ball since the material is such that their hands will stick to the ball each and every time. Latex free exercise bands allow for better involvement in daily exercise programs. Staff also incorporates a low-impact, chair exercise program designed by a Registered Nurse and Physical Therapist. Memory games are a big hit with everyone as they can become quite animated AND competitive! After all that excitement there is time set aside for rest from all the moving and “playing!”
Bay Aging is very proud to have such a life affirming service available for people in the Middle Peninsula and Northern Neck. Is this the right program for you and your loved one? The only way to find out is by visiting the centers, and talking with the nurses and staff.
