About the AmeriCorps VISTA Program

Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA) was founded in 1965 as a national service program designed specifically to fight poverty in America. In 1993, VISTA was incorporated into the AmeriCorps network of programs under the Corporation for National & Community Service (CNCS). AmeriCorps VISTA Members make a year-long, full- time commitment to serve on a specific project at a nonprofit organization or public agency for a modest living stipend. VISTA Members build permanent infrastructure in nonprofit organizations to help them more effectively bring individuals and communities out of poverty.

The VHA VISTA Project provides VISTA Members with the knowledge and skills necessary to support the transition to sustainable and more effective homeless response systems in Virginia communities. VISTA Members are placed in homeless service nonprofits, Continuums of Care (CoCs), and service providers across the state and provide key leadership, guidance, and direction to help VHA’s local partners achieve greater impact for their clients experiencing and at risk of homelessness.
